Ongoing Talent Cultivation

A medium-term hiring strategy to attract market-leading ‘Star’ candidates within priority sectors

Godliman placement contributed to a 4-fold increase in AUM over 8 years

The Challenge

  • Our client had identified two flagship strategies to drive the future growth of AUM. These included: Multi-Sector Fixed Income and European Credit

  • As the keystone of our client’s growth strategy in Europe, both strategies required an important ‘upgrade hire’ which was crucial to get right – first time.

  • Within a relatively small market with scarce talent, to identify the top managers in these sectors and attract them to move to our client.

“Rupert was instrumental in helping us understand the talent we had in-house: the gaps we had in skills to meet our strategic goals, and the landscape for talent externally. His approach was truly consultative: he never pressured us to take a candidate to complete a search and always kept the culture and fit at the forefront of his mind. Rupert was an indispensable partner and helped us grow our business more than 5x during a decade of engagement with our team. My only hesitation in recommending him is I don’t want him working for the competition”.

The Results

Within two years, we hired a top decile Institutional Credit Manager as Head of European Credit.

Over the last eight years, under his leadership, AUM have increased almost four-fold.

Within three years, we hired a senior Multi-Sector Fund Manager to allow succession planning and, five years later, he has taken over as Head of the team.

The Solution

Best-Fit Research

  • We mapped out the top-performing teams in European Credit and Multi-Sector Fixed Income, identified current trends in the market and advised our client on where the market-leading talent lay.

  • Using informal referencing, we identified the candidates most likely to match our client’s culture.

  • We approached a select target list of star Fund Managers and encouraged potential candidates to have a networking meeting with the client to establish an initial dialogue.

  • We maintained regular contact between the preferred candidates and our client over time, in some cases over a period of years, to deepen the relationship and potential interest in joining.
